As a costume design study, this drawing offers a fascinating insight into Natalia Goncharova's process. Faint pencil marks remain around the dancer's headdress, top and trousers, recording the modifications made in the development of the final ensemble.

'Coup de Bambou' is a ballet composed by Erik Satie and takes place on a plantation in South America. The ballet was staged in the early 1940s by Boris Kniaseff's company at the Marigny Theatre in occupied Paris.
