Russian Art
Our collection of Russian Art may be better described as Russian Emigré Art as most of the artists present below will have either lived or worked outside of Russia and came to prominence abroad.
Because of the vast artistic diaspora that left Russia in the course of the late-19th and early-20th centuries, Russian Art is not a category defined by national borders. In fact, in the present selection of artists, you will find that many of the works were not created in Russia, furthermore, some of the artists are better known outside of Russia, like the Lyrical Abstractionists that lived in Paris - André Lanskoy, Serge Charchoune and Alexandre Orloff. Soviet Non-Conformists also often called the ‘Second Russian Avant-Garde’ - Anatoly Zverev, Vladimir Yankilevsky and Lydia Masterkova, are presented here alongside artists who made enormous contributions to the development of Russian avant-garde art in the early-20th century, like the Suprematist Paul Mansouroff and Rayonist Natalia Goncharova.
